Balance the Earth with Ecofund

There has never been a better time to find practical, sustainable environmental ways to reduce the impact of Climate Change.  Ecofund is an innovative new initiative of the Queensland Government to channel investments to protect our natural assets and expand protected areas in Queensland through environmental projects.

Ecofund provides non-profit seeking services to assist Government, business and individuals to meet regulatory environmental offset requirements or to purchase voluntary carbon offsets. It has been established to encourage carbon industry development and support positive environmental outcomes for Queensland. A key goal for Ecofund is to assist the Queensland Government with its target of increasing protected areas in Queensland to 20 million hectares by 2020 - an important goal that needs the support of all Queenslanders.

Voluntary carbon offsets are an important part of carbon reduction plans for everyone. By avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions as the first steps, further action can be achieved by investing in carbon offsets - or as Ecofund like to call it - ecobalancing.

Ecobalancing can be achieved through purchasing credible products that meet accreditation or industry standards and provide additional benefits to the environment. Ecofund is committed to contributing to ethical investment in the carbon industry and does this by ensuring that its ecobalance products are accredited under the Australian Government Greenhouse Friendly initiative or equivalent standards.  Ecofund’s ecobalance products are also sourced from Queensland and include energy efficiency, renewable energy and biodiverse forestry projects.

Greenfest 2009 ecobalanced by Ecofund

Ecofund proudly supports Greenfest through offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the event to reduce its environmental impact and make the event ecobalanced.

The first step was supporting Greenfest through its use of innovative new event practices to avoid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Next we calculate the amount of emissions from the event through a process called carbon footprint calculation. Greenfest collects important information like electricity use, transport and waste disposal that is then used to calculate the emissions. This allows Ecofund to work out the number of tonnes of carbon offsets required to ecobalance the event.  The offsets are then sourced from Queensland based energy efficiency projects and are accredited under the Australian Government Greenhouse Friendly initiative.  The final and most important step with ecobalancing is ensuring that the offset is ‘retired’. Ecofund retires the offsets used to ecobalance Greenfest as this means no one else can purchase the offset product and real environmental action is achieved.

To become ecobalanced and a part of the carbon offsetting community all you need to do is:

  • Make simple choices to avoid and reduce your emissions
  • Calculate your carbon footprint
  • Choose a quality carbon offset vendor  (such as Ecofund)
  • Purchase offsets to balance your carbon emissions
  • Let your friends and family know the environmental action you have made to inspire them.
